Q. What is Eon®?
A. Eon® is a thermoplastic material manufactured from 100% virgin polystyrene plastic. Eon® can be made in almost any shape possible by extrusion with a wood-grain coloration. The material is adaptable to standard wood machining techniques and fastening methods.
Q. What is the Eon® warranty?
A. Eon® comes with a 25 Year Limited Warranty. The product (a) is rot and water resistant, (b) will not splinter, crack or check, (d) contains a UV protection to maintain color and (e) is otherwise free from defects in material and workmanship. This product is a highly engineered plastic extrusion and contains no wood content. This is the most comprehensive warranty for low-maintenance decking on the market.
Q. What are the specifications and dimensions of Eon®?
A. The deck board is 1.25” x 5.5”, weighs 1lb/ft and is available in 12’, 16’ and 20’ lengths. The deck board is structurally designed to span joists that are 12” on center. The handrail is designed as both a top and bottom rail, available in 6’ kits, which include a 5’ spacer for filler between balusters, and 15 balusters. Most building codes require maximum 4” spaces between balusters. Cladding (9”x 3/8”) is available in 12’ lengths, and is used to cover rim joists and deck board ends. Post sleeves are 4”x4”x4’ and cover traditional 4”x4” posts. Q. How do I work with Eon®?
A. Eon® can be cut and drilled like wood. Use a carbide blade with 24 teeth or less. Use a low rpm when using a variable speed tool. Use rapid cuts when working with a high- speed tool. The use of a lubricating spray such as WD40 or Pam cooking spray will help reduce friction of blade. Using a small file will help eliminate any burrs. It is important to pre-drill your holes before screwing through Eon® material. Screws are included with your t-clips, and other screws needed would be a standard deck screw for attaching your rails.
Q. Is Eon® slippery?
A. No, the deck board has very good traction wet and dry. The textured surface of the deck board reduces slippage commonly found on painted wood decks across North America. The surface is surprisingly tacky in bare feet or shoes, wet or dry. Out of a possible 1, where 0 is the most slippery and 1 is the tackiest: Wet Eon® tests at 0.79 Dry Eon® tests at 0.69
Q. How do I clean my Eon® deck?
A. A simple spray from your garden hose will remove loose dirt and debris from your deck. A wash with warm water and mild dish soap once in awhile will keep your deck looking great. Use a squeegee to remove excess water to reduce the chance of water marks, especially where hard water is an issue. Please do not use any kind of solvent on eon decking. NOTE: Petroleum based products should NEVER be used on Eon® decking material.
Q. Does Eon® get hotter than wood?
A. No, due to the adequate spacing that the t-clips provide, Eon® decking will only get as hot as a conventional painted/stained deck.
Q. Do salt water and mold affect eon?
A. The Eon® material is virtually impervious to water, including salt water. Mold is less likely to be a problem with Eon® because there are no natural wood fibers. This makes Eon® ideal for docks and around pools and spas. It should be noted however, that mold will appear almost anywhere under moist, damp conditions. Mold will not damage Eon®.
Q. Will Eon® fade to gray?
A. No, the unique wood grain coloration is consistent throughout the product and will not fade to gray. UV inhibitors are added to the product during the manufacturing process to ensure that the beauty will last. Over time the glossy finish of Eon® will weather to a matte finish, further enhancing the natural look of real wood.
Q. Can Eon® be painted?
A. Yes, Eon® readily accepts acrylic paint. However, due to the incredible appearance and characteristics of the product, paint is not required. Do not use oil based stains due to the nature of thermoplastic material.
Q. I have a scratch on my Eon® deck how do I fix it?
A. Surface scratches will disappear as your deck weathers to a matte finish in the first year. If you should encounter a deep scratch you can do the following: Drag a straight razor horizontally across the deep scratch (the surface will come up much like wax). Once you have removed the scratch you can use WD40 or a car buffer to bring back the finish, otherwise the repaired area will wear to match the rest of the deck in a short time. To remove minor scratches you can also use an automobile buffer or buffer mounted on a hand drill. This will remove minor scratches and bring back the shine.
Q. I want to put a grill on my deck, what do I put under it?
A. Eon® is a closed-cell product and does not absorb moisture. If anything spills on you deck and is wiped up right away it will not stain. The use of a mat under your grill is a good idea. Please do not use a rubber backed mat; rather use one that has an acrylic backing. When using a grill on your Eon® deck please allow at least 1’ spacing between your open lid and your Eon® railing.
Q. Can Eon® be used for structural applications?
A. No. Eon® is strictly a top decking material used for outdoor applications only.
